The black death was a terrible sickness from 1348-1350. Those two years brought nothing but missery. The black death (some people call it the Bubonic Plaque) killed almost 40% of Eurupe. It was said to have spread from rats that were on the trade boats. It might have just been a little case of fleas for the rats, and in modern times we could have eliminated the sickness a lot sooner. But the Renaissance age was NOT known for its cleanliness. When the Plaque struck, the time could not have been worse. The town was an overpopulated, germ-filled, crowded, unsanitary place. So without the knowledge of overcoming germs, the sickness spread like wildfire.
